Anais Auge & Ramon van der Does, Communication and Environmental Politics in the Low Countries: Introduction to the Special Issue, Politics of the Low Countries, Vol. (6)1, pp. 3-18 (2024)
Communication plays a central role in environmental politics, shaping narratives about the environment and influencing perceptions of problems and solutions. This paper introduces a special issue focused on communication and environmental politics in the Low Countries, examining how narratives, particularly the metaphor of “ecocide,” are used to frame environmental issues. The concept of ecocide, which frames environmental damage as a crime, has gained traction among activists and NGOs, drawing on the personification of ecosystems and historical debates surrounding its recognition in international arenas. The paper delves into the narratives of ecocide in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, highlighting the disputes and concerns that arise from the criminal framing of environmental damage. These debates reveal the impact of political narratives and crime metaphors on environmental policy and public perception, including concerns about the potential criminalization of climate protesters.
